Our Festival Venues
Fort Langley National Historic Site
Fort Langley National Historic Site serves as our primary venue because of its connection to early Hawaiian travellers and settlers in this region and for its connection to British Columbian History.
As a former Hudson's Bay Company trading post first established in 1827 (down river) and relocated and built at its present location, in 1839, Fort Langley has a centuries old connection to Hawaii and the Hawaiian people. Hawaiian men were employed by the Hudson’s Bay Company as crew on trade ships and stayed on to build and work at Fort Langley. Men from the Pacific Islands were known as the kānaka from the Polynesian word for "Person".
While Fort Langley traded in fur and agricultural goods, they also processed salmon, purchased from local Indigenous People. They exported the product (salted and packed in barrels) for shipment to the Hawaiian Islands.
Many of the Kānaka men settled in the area and married women from the Kwantlen and Musqueam First Nations.
On November 19, 1858, the proclamation that established the Colony of British Columbia was read out by James Douglas, at this location.
Many of the festival workshops will be held in reconstructed buildings on this site. The large open area in the centre of the Fort will serve as our primary outdoor stage. The Fort Langley National Historic Site and Parks Canada are our event partners.
